We’ve said it many times before and we’ll say it again — Common Heart volunteers are SUPERHEROES!  Behind every food delivery, every Getting Ahead meal prepared, and every food donation sorted and packed is a kind volunteer!

Volunteers and donations from friends like YOU are giving our neighbors the food, resources and hope they need this summer! Your generosity makes a difference!

Patrick & Sue Schmidt of Waxhaw are just one of many married couples who choose to serve together week after week. You’ll typically find this caring couple sorting incoming donations or packing up kids snack bags in our food pantry warehouse on Friday mornings. Patrick is also our resident handyman and we really appreciate his help making small repairs around the office.

But even the most committed volunteers like the Schmidts need resources — training, supplies, and support.

The Schmidts have been serving with us since 2020 after discovering Common Heart through their church, All Saints Anglican, which hosts an ongoing food drive for our neighbors facing food insecurity. 

“There’s always something for both of us to do, and sometimes we need each other’s help to accomplish a task. It’s a fun place to serve and we’re appreciated,” Sue said. “We like meeting people who come to volunteer and making new friends. Plus, we enjoy that we get to work with people of different ages, cultures, and ethnicities.”
