Common Heart adds 5th evening food pantry

There’s another food pantry location coming to Union County! Beginning next Wednesday (March 20) Common Heart volunteers will provide free groceries to families at the first-ever food pantry at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church (8515 Rea Road) in Waxhaw.

The pantry will be held every Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at St. Margaret’s and will be run by caring volunteers. The pantry entrance will be on Rea Road and cars will exit the church parking lot on Crane Road. The parking lot does not open until 5 p.m.

The addition of this pantry – Common Heart’s 5th evening location – will help fill a need for the growing demand for food in the western part of Union County. Common Heart’s other Waxhaw-area pantry at Union United Methodist Church has grown from serving an average of 40 families each week to 90+ families each week.

These evening pantries are open to anyone receiving food stamps OR who has a household income less than 150% of poverty. Visit TEFAP.CommonHeart.org for an eligibility chart. Residents can receive nonperishables once a month and fresh produce, frozen meat, and baked goods once a week.

“Over the last year we’ve had a dramatic increase in the number of families seeking help with groceries who live in the Waxhaw area,” Pantry Network Director Ryan Kolbe said. “This additional location will really help meet this need and work to prevent overcrowding at our other evening pantries. We’re so very thankful and grateful that our friends at St. Margaret’s have stepped up to help fill this need. They’re not only providing the physical location, but many of their church members are eager to volunteer.”

With the new pantry location comes new volunteer opportunities! Registration is now open to volunteer to pack food for this new pantry at the Common Heart warehouse and to serve at the pantry taking applications and distributing food.
