Your gifts at work!

Summer brings sunshine and vacations — but for many of our neighbors, it can also bring deeper isolation.

Senior neighbors like Helen feel it most. She lives alone, without transportation or family nearby. When she joined our Cupboard Ally monthly food delivery program, she wasn’t just hungry — she was lonely.

Thanks to this amazing community of kindness, Helen was paired with a Cupboard Ally volunteer who delivers groceries (and hope!) to her each month. But that gift quickly became something even more powerful.

Her Ally now helps Helen put away refrigerated or frozen food items and then they sit on what she calls her “peace porch” chatting and watching the birds. Sometimes they enjoy a snack or cup of coffee together. A simple gesture, maybe, but one that means everything to Helen.

“It’s a simple act, but that consistent, monthly visit, that genuine conversation, has made a world of difference for Helen,” said Alexis McDonald, Cupboard Ally Program Leader. “It’s not just about the food. It’s about knowing someone cares, someone is checking in and having that regular human connection that she so deeply needed.”

Connections like these are YOUR gifts at work in our community! Every single donation, no matter the size, brings food, companionship, and hope to someone like Helen —someone who might otherwise feel invisible.

During the summer months, donations slow down — but the need hasn’t. That’s why your support right now matters so much.

While others are away or distracted, we can show up with hope for someone who might otherwise be forgotten. The generosity of our community means a neighbor like Helen will be reminded: You matter. You’re not alone. We care about you.

Will you give today and remind another neighbor they’re not forgotten?

Thank you for being the hope in someone’s summer — and for showing up when it matters most. I’m so glad you’re part of this small revolution of kindness.

As always, there’s a lot happening here at Common Heart — and plenty of ways you can jump in and make a difference! Keep reading for more details on that. We’re especially grateful for all the student volunteers who gave their time this summer. As they head back to school, we’ll have more open volunteer spots available. Take a look at your calendar and sign up to serve — we’d love to have you join us!

With gratitude and hope,
