Community Services

Common Heart, in partnership with the IRS and Community Link of Charlotte offers a free tax preparation service each year.  This service typically begins the last Saturday and runs for the tax season. This free service is provided to  households with an income of $56,000 or less. Both Federal and State returns are prepared and e-filed free.

Our volunteers are IRS trained and certified through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). Training takes place each December and January for volunteers.

NEW for 2021: Due to COVID restrictions, we will be using a drop-off/pick-up system. Call 704-218-9060 Ext. 1040 to pass along your name and contact information. One of our volunteers will return your call to fill out paperwork and set up an appointment for drop-off.

Common Heart has been providing this service since January 2012.

You will need to provide photo ID and Social Security cards for each person listed on the return, all income documents, total amounts of itemized deductions, child care information, direct deposit information and your previous year’s tax return. Our volunteers will prepare your return, and it will be double checked while you wait.

Common Heart began partnering with the Council on Aging in Union County during Medicare’s open enrollment in 2017.  Since that time hundreds of Seniors have saved an average of over $1,000. on their prescription drug program and perscritions.. The service is part of the nationwide Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, or SHIIP.

“Our partnership has allowed us to better accommodate many of our neighbors in Indian Trail or Matthews who are elderly or have a disability and may find it difficult to travel to our office in Monroe,” said Andrew Friend, SHIIP Coordinator at Union County Council on Aging. “The best part about our partnership is that all of the staff and volunteers at Common Heart are always so kind and willing to accommodate our team and clients.”
