Volunteer Community Services

Common Heart offers a free tax preparation service from February 1 to April 11 each year for households who make $54,000 or less. We prepare and e-file federal and NC returns. Our volunteers are IRS trained and certified through VITA (Volunteers In Tax Assistance). Training takes place each January for volunteers. To access our service call 704-761-8482 to make an appointment. Ask to make an appointment in Indian Trail.

You will need to provide photo ID and Social Security cards for each person listed on the return, all income documents, total amounts of itemized deductions, child care information, direct deposit information and your previous year's tax return. Our volunteers will prepare your return, and it will be double checked while you wait.  We will also prepare and e-file your state returns.

Medicare ENROLLMENT Assistance

During Medicare's open enrollment in 2017, our first year partnering with union County Council on Aging, 60 people were helped at our site, saving them a combined total of $85,368 on their prescriptions. The service is part of the nationwide Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program, or SHIIP.

“Our partnership has allowed us to better accommodate many of our neighbors in Indian Trail or Matthews who are elderly or have a disability and may find it difficult to travel to our office in Monroe,” said Andrew Friend, SHIIP Coordinator at Union County Council on Aging. “The best part about our partnership is that all of the staff and volunteers at Common Heart are always so kind and willing to accommodate our team and clients. “ Assistance

since 2015, Common Heart has partnered with Charlotte Legal Services which offers help navigating the confusing field of health insurance. Trained volunteers and staff advocate year-round to help local residents get health insurance. They help residents determine if they qualify for subsidies, pick the best plan for them and can search for special enrollment terms and tax exemptions to avoid penalties.

During the 2017 fall open enrollment for health insurance, our partner saw 40 people at our site and helped them access affordable health insurance. Those appointments continue on Wednesday each week at our office.

Our own Executive Director saved over $1,300 a month in healthcare insurance thanks to this free service.
